The Sabine Valley Amateur Radio Association (SVARA, K5GVL) hosted our 2026 Field Day operations at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum in Greenville, Texas. This annual ARRL Field Day event, always held the fourth full weekend in June, brings amateur radio operators together for a 24-hour emergency communications exercise. We set up portable stations under simulated disaster conditions—relying on emergency power sources like generators or batteries—while making as many contacts as possible across the U.S. and around the world.
The scenic museum grounds at 600 I-30 East provide an ideal backdrop, tying into local history as operators often run a special event station (W5M) to honor Audie Murphy, Hunt County’s most decorated WWII hero and Medal of Honor recipient. Activities blend contest-style operating (SSB, CW, digital modes) with public outreach, education on ham radio’s role in emergencies, and demonstrations for visitors. SVARA frequently partners with clubs like the Majors Field Amateur Radio Club, emphasizing public service, training, and community engagement—skills the group also applies year-round, such as SkyWarn spotting for Hunt County.
These events are open to the public, welcoming newcomers to try operating, learn about licensing, and see firsthand how amateur radio supports disaster preparedness and preserves local heritage.

This year we all gathered together Saturday morning. Larry KE5HMR and Don KB7ZJP already had delivered the club trailer to the museum and set it up before I arrived at 10am. We visited a bit and set up the trailer and our swapfest items while more people showed up. We had everything set up and running pretty much right on time at the beginning of Field day at 1pm.

Larry had placed the trailers in very good locations this year and I think everyone liked the more centralized site this year rather than more spread out like we were last year. We had plenty of room for antennas, and we even managed to use some nearby “Infrastructure” for an antenna mount

Larry’s trailer was operating 20 meters daytime and 80 meters nighttime throughout the event this year, and he was by far our “Heavy Hitter”. He managed to pull in some impressive DX this year

We ended up scoring 2128 points overall with 328 QSOs, which is pretty good for our little club. We had a great time and ate way too much good food!
