About SKYWARN®
SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters across the United States. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.
As the SKYWARN® organization for Hunt County, K5GVL members play a crucial role in weather monitoring and public safety. Our trained spotters provide essential information about severe weather events to help protect our community.
Join Our SKYWARN® Team
We welcome new volunteers who want to help protect our community. To become a SKYWARN® spotter, you'll need to:
- Complete the free SKYWARN® training course (approximately 2 hours)
- Learn storm structure and severe weather identification
- Understand proper reporting procedures
- Practice basic severe weather safety

SKYWARN® Net Operations
During severe weather events, we activate our SKYWARN® nets on the K5GVL repeater system. These nets provide:
- Real-time weather updates
- Coordination between spotters
- Direct communication with the National Weather Service
- Emergency information for the public
SKYWARN® Net Operation Procedures
Our SKYWARN® Net Operation Procedures provide detailed guidelines for conducting severe weather nets and reporting procedures. These procedures ensure effective communication between spotters, net control operators, and the National Weather Service during severe weather events.
